Driving Today: Legendary Drives

North Dakota #2

From the Editors of Driving Today

Are you hungry for some history and a relaxing short drive? The Kathryn Road drive from Valley City to Fort Ransom State Park is a brief 42-mile trip, which is filled with history of the early settlers to the area. The starting point, Valley City, is 50 miles west of Fargo.

The Kathryn Road drive (County Rte. 21 and Rte. 58) follows close to the scenic Sheyenne River. On the drive south from Valley City to Clausen Springs you can enjoy picnicking, fishing, hiking trails and boating. Return to Rte. 21 and head south toward the town of Fort Ransom, where you can visit the Fort Ransom Historic Site.

In town, visit the Ransom County Historical Museum, T.J. Walker Historic Site, and the Standing Rock Lutheran Church. Outside town sits a statue of a Viking. The statue is a tribute to Norwegian settlers who first landed here. Two miles south of town is the 887-acre Fort Ransom State Park, and the end of the drive. While this is a short drive it is one missed by many and one you will enjoy and always remember.
